To tap the potential of Indian hatchback cars market, with every launch car makers are trying to get better fuel efficiency ratings by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). Here is the list of top five best mileage hatchback cars in India.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio
Maruti Celerio diesel got the first position in the list with 27.62 kmpl ARAI certified mileage. Initially Maruti has launched only petrol variants of Celerio which has generated immense interest among the buyers because of first of its kind AMT transmission system and last year with the launch of diesel variants it becomes the highest mileage offering car in India. Maruti Celerio diesel is equipped with the 0.8 Liter, 793 cc, 2 Cylinder first of its kind diesel engine developed by the Suzuki. The engine delivers 47 bhp of maximum power with 125 Nm of maximum torque which may look sufficient for driving in urban areas but on highways you may be bit disappointed due to lack of power and performance. You may start feeling noise once you cross 80 kmph speed mark at the speedometer.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio is also available with the petrol variants which are equipped with the same engine which currently powers its legendary vehicle Alto 800. The mileage of Maruti Suzuki Celerio petrol is 23.1 Kmpl certified by the ARAI.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
Second position is also acquired by the Maruti Suzuki with its Baleno Diesel. Since its launch in last year, Maruti Suzuki Baleno has received very good response in the Indian market and the vehicle has received more than 1 lakhs booking till now with around six months of waiting period.
The ARAI certified mileage of Maruti Baleno diesel is 27.39 KMPL. The vehicle is powered by the 1.3 Liter, 1248 cc, Multijet diesel engine which delivers 74 bhp of maximum power with very good performance in both urban areas and on highways. The big thanks go to its lower kerb weight.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno is available with petrol variants as well. The mileage of its petrol variants are 21.4 KMPL as per ARAI. Though, it lacks in terms of mileage but it delivers excellent power output of 83.1 bhp.
Honda has secured third position with its Jazz diesel model. The ARAI certified mileage of Honda Jazz diesel is 27.3 KMPL. This super hatch is powered by the 1.5 Liter, 1498 cc, iDTEC diesel engine which delivers 98.6 bhp of maximum power at 6000 rpm with excellent acceleration and performance. The diesel powered variants are available with only manual transmission while its petrol siblings are available with automatic transmission as well.
The petrol variants of Honda Jazz are comes equipped with the 1.2 Liter, 1199 cc, iVTEC petrol engine with both manual and automatic transmission options. The ARAI certified mileage of Honda Jazz petrol is 18.7 kmpl.
Tata Tiago has got fourth position in the race with its diesel variants. Tata Motors has recently launched the Tiago model which has received good response for its stylish appearance and high performance.
The ARAI certified mileage of Tata Tiago is 27.28 Kmpl. The diesel variants of Tata Tiago are equipped with first of its kind 1.05 Liter, 1047 cc diesel engine which delivers 69 bhp of maximum power with 140 Nm of maximum torque. Though, in terms of power it is far behind from Honda Jazz and Maruti Suzuki Baleno but if we compare with Maruti Celerio, Tiago is more powerful with slight difference in mileage. Another important thing to notice is, Celerio is almost 200 Kilos lighter than Tiago even that it is offering a decent mileage.
Tata Tiago is available with petrol model also, which are powered by the 1.2 Liter petrol engine which delivers 84 bhp of maximum power with 114 Nm of maximum torque. Its ARAI certified mileage is 23.84 KMPL.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire
It is quite clear that Maruti Suzuki dominates the industry when it comes to the mileage and lowe maintenance. The fifth position is also secured by the Maruti Suzuki with its facelifted Swift Dzire diesel model which has been launched with improved fuel efficiency of 26.59 KMPL as per the ARAI.
The new Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is equipped with the 1.3 Liter, 1248 cc, Multijet diesel engine which delivers 74 bhp of maximum power with excellent performance in both city and highway driving conditions. The vehicle is available with petrol model also which are powered by the 1.2 Liter, K12 petrol engine which can generate 83 bhp of maximum power. The ARAI certified mileage of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire petrol models are 20.85 KMPL.
